Are You Serious? (Truth time…this is just between us!)
By: Jill Shea
We go from jingle bells to juggling bills and New Year’s Resolutions. Are you feeling overwhelmed, have you lost your patience or are you enjoying this amazing time of year?
It’s funny I was on Facebook yesterday and was curious about something. I asked when does everyone take down their Christmas decorations. Boy was there a wide variety of answers! Some friends already took everything down, some wait until New Year’s Day, some a week into January. What do you do? Add your two cents to this topic on my Facebook wall.
Let’s go back to New Year’s Resolutions shall we? Why do we think that a specific day of the year will make a difference in our behavior or the way we live our life?
You can’t help and read all the news and tips on how to start the New Year FRESH. Resolutions and goals are being talked about …quit smoking, lose weight, cleaning out the house, blah, blah, blah. Shhh….don’t tell anyone I told you this but statistics show that 97% of resolutions are not realized and 92% fail in the first three days. YIKES!
Don’t get me wrong, I love turning the page of a calendar and especially a New Year and wiping the slate clean. The question is why do we wait or put things off to change a bad habit or start something new? From someone who quit smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, lost 30 lbs and now maintains a healthy weight, was a workaholic, ran a 5K for the first time this year when I never ran before, read the entire Bible in a year when I never picked it up in the past and canceled cable TV. These changes happened when I made the choice and the last one I listed was a joint decision with my husband.
We know which activities and habits we chose are good and which ones are bad.
What if TODAY was the day we intentionally made the effort to exercise more, organized our home, listened to our children better, did more for our husband, quit smoking, started a weight loss plan that we know will work so we feel better in our body, stopped checking our cell phone for messages every 15 minutes or whatever it is you want to change.
It’s time to take the pressure off ourselves AND stop trying to fix other people. If we listen to our inner voice and take a step in the right direction anything is possible. Be strong and courageous! Add in support from family and friends and you’ll be 40-60% more likely to achieve your goal. Sweeeeeet!
YOU are very important and there is something very special about you. It’s doesn’t matter where you are today, you can change, put bad habits behind you and replace them with good habits. Make each day your masterpiece. Release the chains. Are you ready to take that next step? Don’t wait another day, I’m cheering for you!
