Memories from Marie’s 90th Birthday Party

by Jill Shea on November 29, 2011

Last night I went to Marie’s 90th birthday party.  She was smiling the entire time, happy to be surrounded by more than 20 friends plus her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandson.  A beautiful bouquet of balloons were tied to the back of her chair and a huge chocolate cake was presented to her.  You could tell she was moved by the evening as she sat there quietly smiling and taking it all in.

We sang Happy Birthday to you…then as Marie was getting ready to blow out her candles everyone was saying “make a wish Marie, make a wish Marie!”   I watched her eyes tear up and she said out loud, “I just hope I’m here again next year.”  Then she blew out her candles and we all cheered.  She was so moved and people started sharing their favorite memories with Marie.  I could see she is leaving a legacy, everyone loves Marie!

I’ve been thinking of this moment for a while now.  That gave me a good kick in the pants.  We can get so caught up in planning, doing, busy work etc.  I’ve already been planning for 2012, setting goals, training, time off etc.

What really matters?

You can have all the wealth in the world but without your health, family and friends it means nothing.  You can’t enjoy life if you are sick in bed or curled up on the couch with another cold unable to spend time with your loved ones.

Here are my priorities and actually as a family we have this displayed in a frame in our kitchen.

Family Priorities:

1.  Love God

2.  Family First

3.  Work Hard

4.  Be Kind

5.  Always tell the truth

What are your priorities?  Do you have a memorable birthday moment?  Leave a reply below.  Take good care of yourself friends!
